8th INTERNATIONAL MONODRAMA FESTIVAL
FANTASY FOR VIOLIN AND LOVE
Written by ALEXANDER POVOLOTSKY
Based on the novel STEMPENU by SHOLEM ALEJCHEM
Performed by HELENA YARALOVA
Sholem Alejchem (1859-1916), the “Jewish Mark Twain", and the great classic of Yiddish literature, provided the theme for this musical monodrama: his 1888 published novel STEMPENU is probably the most famous literary presentation of a klezmer violinist. But it is also a story of romantic and impossible love. In Alexander Povolotsky’s stage adaptation we can see Rachel, a married family woman, who travels back in her memory to the moment that might have changed her life. 15 years ago, at her friend’s wedding, she met Stempenu, who courted her. Back then, she made a decision – but was it the right one?
Helena Yaralova, born in Kiev, started her acting career at Sovremennik Theatre in Moscow. She immigrated to Israel in 1993 where she worked at Yiddishpiel Theatre, and since 2006 at Cameri Theater (both in Tel Aviv). She won the Israeli Theater Award for her role of the legendary Habima actress Hanna Rovina.
Author and composer Alexander Povolotsky, also born in Ukraine, plays violin with the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra under Zubin Mehta.
